Doty began in an architecture school's model shop. Before it was a construction company it was a pair of hands learning that a joint you can draw is not the same as a joint you can build, and that the distance between the two is where most houses fall apart.
James Doty holds a Bachelor of Architecture. He spent the years after school on working sites — first framing and finishing, then managing — and what he took from both halves of that education is the sense of a drawing as a promise a builder owes the architect. That view shapes how the company runs today.
We take on a small number of projects each year, led personally by James and always in concert with the design team. Past collaborators include Artu Architecture, Denegri Bessai Studio, MacroSpaces, Studio AC, and Canfield & Co. The trades we bring with us are a small roster we have built one project at a time over more than a decade.
Our job, in the end, is unglamorous and exact: read every sheet, raise the detail that needs raising before it becomes a problem on site, and deliver the house the architect drew. Nothing less, and nothing else.
Recent work, built in collaboration with the architects of record. Full portfolio available on request.
We would rather protect your drawings than value-engineer them.
If you are an architect with a demanding residential project, we would like to meet. Our team is trained to read a full set the way you drew it — to flag the detail that is going to fail before it fails, to resolve the RFI in days not weeks, and to hold the trades to your specification.
We work as an extension of your office, not as an adversary across the table. Open-book pricing, a single point of contact, and a founder who has a hand on every project. Client walk-throughs happen on your schedule and with you in the room.
Architects we have worked with are happy to speak with you directly. Please reach out for references.
If you are an architect with a project in design, or a homeowner with a site and a set of drawings, we would be glad to hear from you.
